Welcome to the "Here Birdy, Birdy" Kindergarten Telecollaborative Project

We are a mighty group of Kansas Kindergarten students who are looking to link up with three more classrooms in North America.  Our mission is to discover how many birds we can feed in a school year's time, what color of birds visit our classrooms in each season, and how much birdseed is consumed.  As a bonus, we'll learn about each other.   Read below for more information on the project and click through the links on the sidebar.

What would you need to do for the project?

 

Weekly total commitment - 15 minutes

 

Obtain the following:

 

  1. Hanging bird feeder - this does not need to be an expensive product, just strong enough to hold birdseed and a few birds
  2. Something from which to hang the bird feeder - we use a simple shepherd's hook.
  3. Birdseed
 
Add the following activities to your daily calendar time - Takes less than 5 minutes daily.
  1. Count the number of birds at the feeder - shade in the bar graph with those numbers
  2. Tally the colors of birds at the feeder
  3. Measure how many cups of seed was added to the feeder that day

 

On Fridays

  1. Post your weekly data to our project wiki - Here.  This only takes a minute (Really!)

 

Periodically

  1. Upload digital photos of your class learning through our project (Names are not required) to the wiki. 
  2. Share student drawings
  3. Post student reflections and messages to the other partner schools on our wiki.

 

How long will the project run?

We'll launch the project on the first day of Autumn, and end on the first day of Spring.  Even if you can't start on Sept 21, we'd still be interested in working with you.

 

What Math standards will be addressed through the project? 

  • Understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems
  • Compute fluently and make reasonable estimates
  • Use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships
  • Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement
  • Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements.
  • Formulate questions that can be addressed with data and collect, organize, and display relevant data to answer them
  • Select and use appropriate statistical methods to analyze data
  • Develop and evaluate inferences and predictions that are based on data
